Hostile Words From a Nasty Pig...an Invitation, Too

Last week I wrote about an AIDS group that wants the government to stop Pfizer from marketing Viagra. My argument is simple: people must be held accountable for their actions. To go after Pfizer is ridiculous because it opens up a Pandora's Box of targets for people who don't know how to control themselves. You can start blaming anything from HBO to a clothing line called Nasty Pig for the rise of HIV cases -- so where would the recrimination end?

Well, David Lauterstein, CEO of Nasty Pig, doesn't like my thinking. So offended was he at the sight of his company's name within three words of the letters HIV and AIDS on my blog that he failed to see my point: that neither his clothing line nor Pfizer should be held responsible for the results of people's behavior.

Mr. Lauterstein called me out on his blog yesterday and made me the first inductee to his annual Hall of Shame for my "limited" and "moronic" point of view. I'm in some stellar company -- the image above comes from his blog -- and I find it laughable.

Nasty Pig is in the business of pedaling sex and the fantasy of wild, reckless behavior. And more power to them! But if I throw on a pair of their chaps and get into some wild, unprotected behavior to fulfill my fantasy, I can't go knocking on Mr. Lauterstein's door to tell him that his product and the lifestyle it promotes just gave me a deadly disease.

But of course, Mr. Lauterstein, who probably agrees with me and ponders what role his company has in the global AIDS epidemic, can't see that I'm defending his capitalist right to sell and goes on to shoot himself in the foot by saying:

If this guy [GCL] had done his research he would know that Nasty Pig publicly promotes a positive responsible view of gay sexuality while respecting personal choice. He might have read my interview in Instigator Magazine where I discuss my decision to stay negative. He might have asked around and found out that I love having incredible sex with my positive brothers.
***
Well, I don't subscribe to Instigator Magazine and oddly enough I wouldn't even know who to ask about whom Mr. Lauterstein is sleeping with. But I will read between the lines in his quote and translate:

"...respecting personal choice"-- Barebacking is fine by me
"...I love having incredible sex with my positive brothers"-- HIV isn't the worst thing that can happen to you.

With these pearls of wisdom just floating on a clothing line's blog I am AMAZED that the Board of Health hasn't availed itself of Mr. Lauterstein's unique, insightful opinions on sex and disease.

But Mr. Lauterstein is no punk -- he has enough sense to do a Google Blog Search for his company and that's how he found my blog. I appreciate his comments and his correcting me on the fact that his company has been around since the 90s. Mazel tov!

And I also appreciate his invitation for us to meet "man to man." So Mr. Lauterstein, if you're reading this, I accept your invitation for us to meet. I have some questions for you and I'm sure you have some questions for me. I'm not "coming after Nasty Pig" as you say on your blog, but you've opened the door for what I hope can be a frank and productive debate on the issues that affect our community.

Are you man enough?

I originally had no comment on the original post, because I was not completely certain what your position was. So, I gave you the benefit of the doubt and trusted that you were indeed using Nasty Pig merely as an example to support your view that Viagra should be barred from marketing its product in a free market (BTW- you can thank the big tobacco law suits for emboldening people to use the Government for this kind of coercion).

I will say that I think that the Nasty Pig response is not totally unwarranted- although the intensity of it certainly is, since it was not made perfectly clear in the original post.

Now it is clear and I'm glad that my faith in you has been validated.

I am amazed at your comments about Nasty Pig clothing company and it's CEOs.

You state your intention was to point out that sexy tv or clothing can't be blamed for the rise of HIV/STDs infections. This is true. And yet you then go on to blame companies like Nasty Pig anyways. You say Pfizer can’t be blamed for marketing a lifestyle; that it is the individual’s responsibility to account for their own actions. But, you say, if they wanted a better target they should go after Nasty Pig cause they are really promoting unsafe behavior. Am I reading your words correctly? Is this what you thought you were writing? Cause that’s the way it came out.

In your Jan 29th response, you make a direct connection between "fantasy of wild" sex and "reckless" sex. Nasty Pig's clothing provides and promotes an expression of many things, but in none of them do they promote unprotected, unsafe, irresponsible or reckless behavior. Please tell us where on their site or in their designs it tells the public to fuck without condoms, or to shoot up using dirty needles. Where?

To the contrary, they have worked within the community to make sure that people know that they can express their nasty pig side SAFELY. It is you who make that uneducated and irresponsible connection. And, you are doing everyone a disservice by not making the distinction yourself. Or is it that you do not see any distinction between these two things. You seem to lump all of them together. Oh, black leather is hot and sexy, so it must be bad and unsafe for you. What are you, nuts?

The ill-informed bug-chasing idiot (as you call them) need to be shown that there is a way to be playful, rough, dominant, submissive, etc.. And it can be done safely. We need to address their self respect and education, cause if they don’t have either of those they will get infected anyway... whether it’s wearing a pair of chaps, picking someone up from the bowling league, or having sex with rose petals and Neil Diamond playing in the background.

And lastly, you read between the lines rather poorly, try reading Mr. Lauterstein's entire statement. And I don't get your odd association with he "loves having sex with positive brothers" equals "HIV isn't the worst thing that can happen". Are you saying that Mr. Lauterstein is welcoming HIV into his body by having sex with HIV pos person or that he is being unsafe. That's quite a reach. Please explain.

You picked one company (who it appears you did no research on) and decided to go off on them. And then in your follow-up you proceed to pull out your self-righteous gay self and fling far reaching theories of what is going on in their heads. You amaze me.

Mark, go on Craig's List right now and go into the M4M section and see what safe sex the "nasty pigs" there are promoting.

The company does have a right to sell whatever it wants, but don't call try to fool me and tell me that their monicker and the photos they display on their site and their ethos aren't more in line with the more reckless members of our community.

And yes, you can get into just as much trouble in a pair of Nasty Pig chaps as you can in a pair of True Religion jeans (my denim of choice).

Finally, in response to your question: Are you saying that Mr. Lauterstein is welcoming HIV into his body by having sex with HIV pos person or that he is being unsafe?

My answer: Young gay men need encouraging messages about who they are and who they can be. In the throes of an AIDS epidemic that is claiming younger lives by the day, it's reckless for Mr. Lauterstein to be so cavalier about the way he talks about his sex life. HIV is not sexy and that was what he implied in his reply to me.

HIV is not sexy. I never implied that.

Do me a favor...do not talk about me or my company on your blog again. I gave you the opportunity to talk to me face to face and you squandered it so I am done with this non-sense.

You are making public false statements about my company. That is LIBELOUS. You are SLANDERING my corporation and I won't tolerate it anymore.
