Colombia: Your Friend in Latin America

While some may think that Venezuela, Bolivia and Brazil are leading Latin America into the bottomless pit of poverty that is communism, Colombia is doing everything it can to defend democracy. A strong US ally after the deadly drug wars of the 80s and 90s, here's a very interesting article talking about the progress made in the country from today's San Antonio Express:

In late September and early October, San Antonian Henry Catto traveled to Venezuela, Colombia and Nicaragua with a group of seven former U.S. ambassadors. In Nicaragua and Venezuela, they witnessed threats to democracy. In contrast, Colombia is presided over by a pro-U.S. president who makes democracy work in the most difficult of situations.

While this could very well be tinged with some GOP propaganda, after all, Colombia's President is very chummy with Bush, it's nice to know that the country isn't on W's hit list.

Note: The picture above is of an orchid, Colombia's national flower.

Well, I guess that's as good as Bush is gonna get from you GCL in your current incarnation. A democracy in a sea of dictatorships...but wait...the President of Colombia is friends with Bush...

Unbelievable. Really.

Haha...gimme a break, I also acknowledged that the economy is doing well. Super, in fact. I don't hate W, I just don't agree with the way he does things. And yes, while it's great for Colombia to be on good terms with the US, we all know the trouble being chummy with Bush can get you into. Just ask Tony Blair.

GCL -

Give us all a break. You mention Colomobia only in the service of bringing up "GOP Propaganda" and a snide remark about "W's Hit list."

If it's so God awful for Colombia's president to be chummy with Bush - perhaps he should become chummier with Chavez. Sure, he's not as hated in the world. Or even Chirac. He's not as hated. That way, we can all go down the road to dictatorship - but at least we won't do it divisively, or (gasp) with W's well wishes.

GCL - when did you become so remarkably partisan? It seems like a new development.

I wonder how long is will be before W convinces the Columbian President to repeal gay marriage. Friend or foe, Bush just needs to start getting a little more focused and stop trying to run the world - his way. For f sake, he never travelled outside of Mexico before he was President.
