Election 06: What Happened to the Immigrants and the Gays?

From today's New York Times:

In many ways, the economy has not looked so good in a long time. The price of gas at the pump has tumbled since midsummer. Unemployment has fallen to its lowest level in more than five years. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average has finally returned to its glory days of the late 1990’s, setting records almost daily.
****

The issue for fickle, easily-deceived Amercians is now the "direction" of our country. The culture war is on the backburner for now (our country is on first-date mode with Barak Obama) and simple-minded Americans everywhere are now asking themselves if they still trust the thieving warmongers they elected into power two years ago.

I just want to know where the "illegals" went and what happened to the threat on the American family? Of course, I'm taking for granted the fact that we will never leave Iraq, so nuts to the soldiers who are stuck there and to their families who are awaiting their safe return. Perhaps Iraq will become a serious issue of concern for our nation's people a-la Darfur in the summer of '08.

The Republicans are trying to ride on their laurels through the November elections, but after seeing my new fav film "Marie Antoinette" this weekend, I would love nothing more than for the American public to "storm" the system (through the poll booths) and demand accountability from the Republicans even after the Dems win control of both Houses. This year found the Republicans sinking to new lows in their fear propaganda campaign and while it's going to cost them these elections, they should still be held accountable for the reckless and cheap tactics they've been using to drag our country into unnecessary conflict -- both at home and abroad.

Well, I just got back to my apt. from some moderate drinking so excuse me if I don't see totally coherent, but here's a thought. I agree with you, GCL. If only recklessness and corruption were your beefs and not Republicans who are reckless and corrupt, you'd actually have my full support. Good - let's storm the gates and get rid of the reckless and corrupt Republicans AND Democrats (there are many - though the networks don't report with the same vigor - note Harry Reid's sad tale being buried by virtually every media outlet but the non-traditional media). I think, GCL, when you and others put your partisanship behind you and began searching for facts and seek to root out the bad, not just the Republicans (the terms are not synonymous) you may actually have an objective point.

A small aside: Trent Lott is a bigot. The Republican party themselves drove him out. Al Sharpton is an anti-semite who has incited murder. Not one fellow Democrat even MENTIONED this FACT when he ran for candidacy - EVEN DURING THE DEBATES.

I just think that's worth noting.

As a Mississippi raised individual, I can safely say that Lott is not a bigot. Ain't it funny how Chris Dodd can similarly praise Robert Byrd (D,KKK) and nobody gives a shit?

No, not really.

Berdo, thanks for your very coherent comment. Corruption is rampant across Washington, so I think we can all agree that it's not just a Republican issue. That said, I do think that the Republican agenda does lend itself to more corruption given its close ties to big business and preferential treatment of the rich.

As for Al Sharpton, he's as much of an anti-Semite as Ehud Olmert is anti-Muslim. Both men have seen their people victimized and are the voice that say "enough, we're not putting up with abuse from anyone anymore."

TGC, I can't comment on Chris Dodd...must investigate.

GCL -

If only you placed objectivity above partisanship. I swear, in your earlier blogs, it seemed that you did. Now, it seems that you function as a DNC consultant, waving your hand across any inconvenient facts and making faulty analogies that I am simply amazed at.

Al Sharpton incited a Crown Heights mob that killed a young Hasidic boy, he stood outside Freddy's Fashion Mart and incited murder of at Freddy's Fashion Mart. That's the tip of the iceberg, GCL. If all you have to say in the matter is to inexplicably bring up Ehud Olmert of all people - then I must say I have serious doubts about your judgement. Is that it GCL? Is that ALL you have to say with an anti-semitic "reverend" inciting Jewish murder on the streets of New York and his entire disgusting history?

I would be happy to list out the "Big Business" contacts of the Democratic party if you are intersted. Simply making the assertion that "Republican ties" somehow make them more susceptible to corruption without backup is misleading - to say nothing of the convenient wave of the hand and dismiss response to the Harry Reid example I brought up.

Where on Earth is the old GCL? Bring him back!

BTW, TGC, Trent Lott IS a bigot. I stand behind that. If you can not admit that, then you clearly are not calling anyone a bigot on your side of the political fence.
